As Per Times Now News, a 19 km section of the 29-kilometre Dwarka Expressway between Mahipalpur in New Delhi and Kherki Dhaula in Gurugram is likely to become operational in the near future. The expressway will be opened in stages, according to NHAI officials. Public access to some portions of the Gurugram stretch has already been granted and the stretch will be fully operational in January. By mid-2023, hopefully in June, the remaining 10 km of the Delhi stretch will be completed.

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) previously announced that this section would be completed by December 2022. But it was delayed. NH 248-BB (Northern Peripheral Road) or Dwarka Expressway starts at Shiv-Murti on NH-8 (Delhi-Gurugram Expressway) and ends near Kherki Daula Toll Plaza, passing through Dwarka Sector 21. Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway and other arterial roads are expected to experience reduced traffic congestion.

Nitin Gadkari, the Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways, previously commented on the project by saying that the expressway would reduce traffic congestion on the Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway (part of the Delhi-Jaipur-Ahmedabad-Mumbai arm of the Golden Quadrilateral) and arterial roads, primarily from residents in West Delhi.

There will also be a reduction in congestion on Sohna Road and Golf Course Road as close to 50-60 percent of the traffic on NH-8 will be diverted onto the upcoming expressway. As part of the plan for decongestion of the capital city of Delhi, this prestigious project will play a crucial role. In addition to providing direct access to the India International Convention Centre (IICC) in Sector 25 of Dwarka, the Dwarka Expressway will also provide alternative connectivity to IGI Airport through a shallow tunnel, the minister stated.

Moreover, the authorities hope that the expressway will contribute to the reduction of air pollution in Delhi-NCR as well. A total of Rs 9000 crore is estimated to be incurred in the construction of the project, which is part of the Union government’s flagship Bharatmala Project. A major feature of this highway is that it is the country’s first elevated urban expressway as well as the longest and widest urban road tunnel in the country. In addition to the 16 lanes of access control, both sides of the highway provide a minimum of three lanes of service roads.
